This is a different post so it’ll be interesting to see the response. As silly as this may sound I’m doing this based on feedback I got on a picture I posted on my Instagram (@graceoliviasusan.) I took a photo of my shelves to show the framed Valentines card I bought for myself, which I thought was a pretty nifty thing to do. Why wouldn’t you buy a Valentines card that has a drawing of a sausage dog that says ‘Love You Longtime?’
On my Instagram and also my Facebook, I had a few people mention how neat and organised my shelves looked, although I thought differently. I, therefore, thought I’d attempt to do a run down on how I present my stuff. I find organisation weirdly satisfying and find it brings me a bit of clarity, I’m just a tiny bit sad!
As much as I’d like to be a minimalistic and concise person with my stuff, my personality says otherwise. There’re certain things I have, that I probably really don’t need and but have to put it on display because I want to see them on a daily basis. Did I need to buy myself a cool Valentines card and frame it? Probably not but I did and I love it. I’ll be honest, I do think that sometimes I hold onto or buy too much crap and as much as I want to hold on to it, sometimes things need to be put into storage until I move to a bigger place and can exhibit it, or chucked out. My bedroom shelves are as neat as I can get them, which is a big achievement and I hope you like them as much as I do.
In my eyes, it’s all about arranging things together that compliment each other and thinking about colour and texture, keeping it as simple as possible, although sometimes all those tips fly straight out the window! I do have a bit of a pet peeve, though. I really don’t like when people put up shelves and put nonsense on them. I like ornaments and objects as you’ll see but I don’t get why you’d solely put up a shelf or a bookcase and just put ornaments on them. I’ve put shelves and a bookcase up to help myself out as my flat has next to no storage. At the end of the day, you just make it look neat and balanced as much a possible so that you’re not creating clutter but an organised mess!
The top shelf is probably my favourite. On the right I have layered two of my favourite frames together. My main focus was to stick with birch and white. Although the bigger frame is a darker tone of wood compared to birch but I think it just about works. I was too in love with the transparency of the glass with a quote placed on top that the frame was irrelevant. Although I try not to be too cliche with having sayings all around my flat, these two frames were a must. Having them in my bedroom is nice, waking up each morning to ‘Do All Things With Love’ is surprisingly motivational. Then having ‘Live, Love, Woof’ layered on top is just brilliant. No? Then pairing it was dachshund bookends definitely pulls the whole shelf together, of course, in my opinion.
Moving onto the shelf underneath. I needed this to be a shelf where I can store things that I use on a daily basis. Although it’s a bit cluttered but then that was inevitable, displaying my favourite makeup bag and a matching mug with most of my makeup brushes in works well I think. I’m absolutely besotted with my framed Valentines card but I think that might be what makes this shelf look a bit cluttered but again, I feel I’ve made it work. Lastly, my two tatty wicker pots which you can get everywhere and anywhere. The big one is filled with cotton pads and the smaller one, ear buds. Very well hidden and frequently used.
Finally, the top of my IKEA unit. It was a bigger surface area to work with but I wanted to keep it fairly minimal to work in with my shelves. The wooden box on the left is actually a utensil unit from the kitchen section of IKEA. However, I place my makeup palettes and false eyelashes in the back and at the front two makeup bags filled with makeup I use on occasion and then a marble soap dispenser filled with moisturiser. All again, stuff I would want to easily get to but neatly contained. Next to the wooden unit is a whistle box filled with my favourite shoes and then a Jewellery box on top, from Homebase. I then sneakily put a flower headpiece on top of the jewellery box for a bit of colour and to hopefully motivate me to work it into an everyday outfit! Now let’s not forget my Dachshund obsession is real because hidden at the end is a Dachshund (wearing a crown) ornament, I couldn’t resist.
My whole entire bedroom is very bland, however its a box room so my shelves, IKEA unit and a double bed is all that would fit. Thats why my shelves are some what sacred as they give my room a bit of personality. I hope this was some what helpful, I know there’re other people out there that would probably do what I’ve done a lot better but this is what I’ve made work and I’m bloody chuffed! Also, this isn’t just my bedroom, it’s my boyfriends too. He had no choice in the matter on how I styled this room although throughout this post I should have said ‘our’ bedroom so I’ll apologise now, sorry Andrew!
